According to behavior psychologist Charles Spielberger, anger is an unpredictable emotion that can move from mild irritation to intense rage and fury within a short span of time. Just as other emotions lead to biological changes in our body, anger too leads to rise in blood pressure and heart rate followed by increased production of hormones like adrenaline. There can be several triggers to anger outbursts including certain people, events and traumatic memories.
Expressing anger and control
People have a tendency to vent out their anger at the nearest possible object, human or animal, in an aggressive or brutal manner depending on their anger level. Though anger is a natural response which can sometimes help protect us it is not healthy to lash out at things that annoy us as it can be detrimental in the long run. People approach anger in these common ways by either expressing it, suppressing it or maintaining calm by changing the topic.
Though psychologists tell us to control anger or redirect it towards productive activities instead of destructive actions, this can sometimes lead to a worse condition. People with suppressed anger issues can become pathologically destructive by venting out their pent up anger and frustration on people or animals that have no relation to the cause of their anger. They can also become overly critical or cynical about people or instances around them and cannot develop long term relationships with anyone due to their distrusting nature. These people are unable to express their anger in a constructive manner and tend to turn it towards themselves leading to health issues like high blood pressure, anxiety or depression.
You must have seen people around you who are angrier than others and are not able to control their emotions, while there are others who do not vent their anger, but are always short tempered and sulky. Scientists say that there are both biological and psychological reasons behind people with anger issues. While some are able to handle unfortunate childhood incidents in a positive manner some are not able to let go which becomes troublesome as they grow.
There are diverse opinions among people about which strategies are best to manage anger. While some recommend letting it out others recommend suppressing it or using it in a constructive manner while therapists recommend relaxation.
People who have unmanageable anger issues are advised that counseling, along with relaxing techniques such as meditation and yoga, can help them learn to control their emotions without causing harm to themselves or people around them.
